There’s something about spring that makes you want to open the windows, clear out the clutter, and start fresh. When the weather warms and brings brighter mornings and longer days you can feel your energy shift. It’s almost instinctive like when suddenly the birds start singing.

But when we think about spring cleaning, we usually picture closets and garage, not ourselves.

Our bodies move through seasons just as nature does. After months of heavier foods, less sunlight, more time indoors, and slower movement, it’s completely natural to feel a bit sluggish as winter fades. This is the body’s way of showing it’s ready for a shift. A gentle spring reset can help clear what’s been weighing you down, create space for something lighter, and support your transition into a more energized, active season.

So, what exactly is a detox?

Your body has a built-in detox system – the liver, the kidneys, the digestive system, the lymphatic system and the skin – do the work every day to keep your body healthy. But after the long winter your body could use a little extra support. A spring detox isn’t about forcing anything it’s about supporting the body systems that are already working for you. Detox don’t mean not eating or doing anything extreme, in fact the most effective detox is simple and supportive for your body.

Some signs I often see that suggest my body may be asking for a gentle detox:

  • Bloating and or sluggish digestion

  • Brain fog

  • Skin breakouts

  • Feeling off but not sick

  • Low energy

What a gentle Detox looks like

  1. Hydration First

Water helps your kidneys and lymphatic system do their job. Add lemon to the water or drink herbal teas if that helps you drink more

  2. Lighter, easier‑to-digest foods

Add more leafy green vegetables, berries and fibre rich foods. These support your liver and digestive health. Here are some foods that can help your spring tuneup.

  • Leafy greens

  • Cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cauliflower)

  • Berries (blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, strawberries)

  • Lean proteins (eggs, chicken, fish, tofu)

  • Healthy fats (avocado, olive oil, nuts)

  • Whole grains (quinoa, brown rice)

  1. Support Elimination

Daily bowel movements are key to feeling lighter and energized. Those fiber rich foods and adequate hydration are simple fixes. And exercise – daily walking can make a big difference in keeping you balanced.

  1. Move your body daily

Walking, yoga, strength training all support healthy lymph flow by encouraging circulation and preventing fluid stagnation.

  1. Prioritize sleep

Your body does much of its natural detox work overnight, and when sleep is disrupted or insufficient, that process can slow down, and you can feel the difference. Quality rest helps your liver, lymphatic system, and digestive system do their jobs more efficiently. Poor sleep can make everything feel a bit more backed up and sluggish. Again, regular exercise improves your sleep.

It’s not about restriction

Spring detox isn’t about erasing winter habits. It’s about aligning with your body as it moves into a lighter season. Remember: small shifts are always better than extreme cleanses.

Here are some of the things I do in the spring every year:

  • Shift your diet – I eat fewer stews and heavy soups

  • Nourish what feels depleted – I drink more smoothies, eat salads and raw veggies

  • Reconnect with your body – get more exercise. I do yoga, more walking, bike riding and stretching

  • I drink more water with lemon

Your body will appreciate the extra support. And you can spring into the new season.
